Day 01: Arrive Vientiane (-/-/-)
Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to your centrally located hotel. The capital of Laos, Vientiane is a combination of East and West, with an old French influence. After a short rest, enjoy a walk around the capital, taking in the historical sites and architecture. Enjoy the sunset over the Mekong River and immerse yourself in the culture of the local Lao people.
Day 02: Vientiane – Luang Prabang (B/-/-)
After breakfast, tour the former royal temple of Wat Prakeo, and explore the thousands of Buddha statues in Wat Sisaket. Visit Vientiane’s ‘Arc de Triumph’ Patuxay Monument, on the way to the sacred That Luang Stupa. Find antique and handmade souvenirs in the Morning Market and take in the artefacts of the National Museum (closed on Tuesdays) that depict the history of Lao from ancient times through the revolution. We will then take a short flight to the World Heritage Listed city of Luang Prabang. Known for its natural scenery and rich culture, Luang Prabang is home to hill tribes and other groups. Stroll around the Night Market with its local textiles, then climb to the peak of Mt Phousi for a beautiful sunset over the city and Mekong River. Stay overnight in Luang Prabang.
Day 03: Luang Prabang – Pak Ou (B/-/-)
This morning, enjoy a tour of Wat Visoun, the city’s oldest temple; Wat Aham and its shrines; Wat Xiengthong and its traditional architecture; as well as Wat Mai and Wat Sene. Enjoy a cruise upstream the Mekong River with a chance to explore the Pak Ou Caves, filled with golden Buddha statues. You will also visit Ban Xanghai Village where they produce rice wine. On the return trip to Luang Prabang, cruise past more local villages and see the royal temple of Wat Longkhoun. Take a short drive to Ban Phanom and see the local hand weaving. Stay overnight in Luang Prabang.
Day 04: Depart Luang Prabang (B/-/-)
After breakfast visit the National Museum (closed Tuesdays) and admire the artwork from early kings to the last sovereign. Also visit silver makers and the Fine Arts School and Central Market. Then transfer to the airport for your next flight.
*An optional early morning gives you the opportunity to participate in the sacred Lao tradition of collecting Alms. Every morning the saffron clad monks collect offerings of Alms (often sticky rice, fruits, and sweets) from the locals. Outsiders are welcome to also offer Alms during this revered ritual. The daily ceremony is aids the monks in gathering their one daily meal, however they also distribute the offerings to children in need. This is a once in a lifetime experience that is highly recommended.
