The Yangtze plays a large role in the history, culture and economy of China. The prosperous Yangtze River Delta generates as much as 20% of the PRC’s GDP. The Yangtze River flows through a wide array of ecosystems and is habitat to several endemic and endangered species including the Chinese alligator, the finless porpoise, the Chinese paddlefish, the (possibly extinct) Yangtze River dolphin or baiji, and the Yangtze sturgeon.
Day 01: Arrive Chongqing (-/-/D)
Upon arrival in Chongqing , meet and transfer to downtown and start your city tour including a visit to the Erlin park, People’s hall and Three Gorges Museum, dedicated to protecting the history and culture of the Three Gorges area. If time permits, also visit the General Stilwell Museum. Enjoy famous Chongqing hotpot dinner tonight before embarking your Victoria cruise ship and sail away at 9:00 pm from this picturesque Mountain City.
Day 02: Shibaozhai (B/L/D)
Take a shore excursion to Shibaozhai, with its impressive wooden pagoda, appropriately named “The Pearl of the Yangtze”. Depending on river conditions, an alternate excursion may be substituted to Fengdu Visiting the New Relocation Village built for families who have moved as a result of the Yangtze’s rising waters brought about by the Three Gorges Dam. Optional Shore Excursion to Fengdu’s “Ghost City”, known for its statues of ghosts and devils on Mingshan Hill.
Day 03: Goddess Stream “Small Gorges – Shiplocks (B/L/D)
Enter the Three Gorges, one of nature’s most extraordinary sculptures. Today you will pass through the first two—Qutang Gorge and Wu Gorge. Qutang Gorge is the shortest (5 miles), narrowest (500 feet), and most dramatic. The 25-mile long Wu Gorge is known for its quiet beauty, forest-covered mountains, and cliffs so sheer that the sun barely penetrates the precipices. Transfer to another vessel for a relaxing excursion through the attractive gorges of Goddess Stream. Depending on river conditions, an alternate excursion may be substituted to the gorges of Shennong Stream. Enter Xiling Gorge, the longest (41 miles), and the deepest of the Three Gorges. In the evening, sail through the Three Gorges Dam ship locks.
Day 04: Three Gorges Dam – Yichang (B/L/D)
Morning visit to the Three Gorges Dam at Sandouping, the largest project of its kind in the world. Arrive Yichang-the economic and cultural centre of western Hubei Province in the afternoon and free at your leisure to explore this small town.
Day 05: Xiling Gorges (B/L/D)
Sail through Xiling Gorge, the longest (41 miles), and the deepest of the Three Gorges. Excursion: Tribe of the Three Gorges Shore Excursion offering an interesting glimpse into life in the Xiling Gorge region.
Day 06: Shennong Stream – Wu Gorge – Qutang Gorge (B/L/D)
Take an excursion through the Shennong Stream Small Gorges, which are narrower than the Three Gorges, but very impressive. Pass through Wu Gorge/Qutang Gorge.
Day 07: White Emperor City (B/L/D)
White Emperor City (Baidi Cheng) – Shore excursion to this ancient site overlooking the western end of Qutang Gorge. White Emperor City has long been a refuge for would-be kings and poets who have traveled here to be inspired by its majestic views. Legend has it that in 25AD, white vapor in the shape of a dragon rose from a well here, and Gong Sunshu, a soldier who had his headquarters here, declared himself the White Emperor. Remains of the city wall can be seen on the hill behind Baidi Mountain, and a temple built to commemorate Gong’s reign dates back over 1,950 years.
Day 08: Depart Chongqing (B/-/-)
After breakfast, arrive Chongqing for disembarkation and transfer to airport for your next flight.
